The ABCs of Prenatal Care

All babies deserve a healthy start. That’s why the ABC (A Baby’s Coming) Prenatal Program at NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield provides medical, nutritional, educational and social support to help local moms-to-be have a healthy pregnancy and delivery and give their babies the best start possible.

The program is designed for all pregnant women covered by the Partnership Health Plan of California (the local Medi-Cal HMO), Medi-Cal and those who have no insurance; but any pregnant woman can use ABC.

“Our clients receive more than medical care,” says Diane Harris, director of the ABC Prenatal Program. “ABC is a comprehensive program staffed by caring professionals with an entire network of resources.”

The staff includes physicians, nurse practitioners, health educators, a dietitian, a social worker and support personnel who are fluent in Spanish and English.

ABC is a provider of the Sweet Success Program, the California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program. Sweet Success provides comprehensive technical support and education to medical personnel and community liaisons to assist in promoting improved pregnancy outcomes for high-risk pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes and women who develop diabetes while pregnant, called gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Diabetes is a complication for up to 14 percent of pregnant women. The program’s goal is to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality for this high-risk group.
