What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine examines six areas of a patient’s health that contribute to optimal living. These include medical nutrition and gastrointestinal health, environmental exposures and detoxification, hormonal optimization, sleep, exercise and the mind-body connection.

With functional medicine, traditional medical treatments are administered only when a patient requires a bridge to better functioning while they are working toward a more natural state of health. Innovation, integration and education are the keys to success when you are evaluating and managing patients with very complex chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, chronic fatigue, headaches, depression, multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia.

Practitioners of functional medicine believe that all individuals have unique physical and genetic characteristics that make them vulnerable to certain medical ailments. These individual factors, which affect mind, body and spirit, intertwine with one another to create
a web-like pattern of cause and effect. However, common symptoms or signs do not necessarily imply a common cause. The “one disease, one pill” style of medicine does not necessarily hold true with functional medicine.
